If you engage in Link Building with the authority sites in your niche, you will have a two fold benefit of gaining authority yourself as well as improving your search engine rankings. Now comes the tricky part-

Why will these authority sites exchange links with you?

What will make them choose you among the million other offers they have from similar sites?

And even if they do pick you, what exciting things can you offer them, so that they recommend you further?

Discussed in this guide are the steps to identify the authority sites and get links from them.

What Are These Authority Sites?

The absolute authority websites are mostly ‘.gov’, ‘.edu’, and possibly some ‘.org’. They have been there for years and have built their authority status over time. They are also considered authoritative due to their content and the trust that is placed in the same by the hundreds of sites in the same niche. The essential thing is that the search engines trust authority websites. They take their word very seriously when they link towards a site.

The authority sites are the ones that usually come in before PageRank 7 in your niche. Their top search position is due to good links to them, and they are linked to other authority sites. So the engines believe that they are old and they are trusted. And you can find the ones in your niche by doing a Google home page search.

Tips To Finding Authority Sites -

A search for “www” displays the local authorities. Type in .gov to see the government sites suggested.

A search for “leading mobile companies” or “top sports car retailers” will lead you to the industry majors

A search for “top universities”, “list of government agencies” will show the authoritative sites.

To link to sites already linking to authority sites, use the Bing operator “linkfromdomain:authority.com”. This lets you know the sites that the authoritative sites is linked to and you can link to the second tier sites.

One Way Links For Authority Sites Are The Best

Search engines will rank your site better if you have one way links from authoritative sites. These links are a clear signal to search engines that for that certain keyword your site has the best content and information. That is why every single link from an industry major helps.

Tips To Get Links From Industry Majors-

The task at hand is tough, and you need to be backed by an immaculate site. High quality and relevant content. Something new and interesting to attract the authority site.

Offer To Write Content For Them: In the search algorithms dominated by the Panda, content is the most important element that can get you entry anywhere. That is why if you offer them to write great and unique content, they may take you up. You have to have compelling-informative and original content to ensure that your piece is published. Get a link to your domain from somewhere in the write up or from the reference box. Anything related to your niche that helps people and solves certain issues not been addressed before will work great. You can also write tips-FAQs and interpretation of the latest laws and news to grab the attention of industry majors.

An Affiliate Program Offer: If you have some money to spare, then you can get links from authoritative sites by offering them an affiliate program. The company will get a percentage of any sales resulting from the link on their site. It is simple with no complications and you can approach educational sites, or government sites, military websites, news sites etc. and offer them this idea. Be wary of approaching publications with this idea as they may consider sales and profit off their credibility as unethical.

A Discount Offer For Their Users: This strategy is pretty simple. You can approach and authority site, like a news site, and you can offer their visitors a discount on your products. How about offering to create a special section of products and discounts for their members/readers on your site? They will be benefited with more users joining in as the news of the discount spreads. And you will get that important link. If they require more, then take a big cut in your meat, and offer them a share of your profits resulting from the traffic they diverted. This may sound as costing your business heavily, but don’t worry the results and the ranking you will get following the links will soar your sales up much further. More traffic- more sales!

A contest or giveaway: A contest can be super beneficial, just take one look at the success of shopify and Tim Ferriss.

The Takeaway-

Authority links matter and you need to get them. Fix up your site and pitch them as directed above. If you and your site seem genuinely useful to users, you will walk home with the coveted link.

Do you Twitter? Gotta be honest – even we’re not the best at this as it didn’t really create any biz as we’re B2B but for some of our ecomm and B2C clients this has been a gold mind. Below is quick breakdown.

Twitter can make you money, build your brand, get you clients, and bring on some great joint venture projects. No one made me the Twitter police but I have noticed there are ways to work Twitter and there are ways to use Twitter that won’t get you any work.

Here are some dont’s with regards to getting followers:

1. Don’t try to amass a huge following before you’ve done some tweeting. People will not be interested in following you when they click on your Twitter page to see what you’ve got, and notice you don’t have much. You need to have tweeted more than, “Trying to figure this Twitter out” and “I think I’ve got it figured out now.” Tweet, tweet, tweet before you gather your flock. Don’t know what to say? Try “retweeting” (RT) some other peoples’ tweets that resonate with you. Reply to what someone else says and start up a conversation. Tell what you’re doing on your business right now. Those are several tweets in the making right there.

2. Don’t shoot out promotion after promotion. When others look at your timeline, they’ll notice you’re just in it for you. People want to know what’s in it for them. There are millions of Twitters to follow, why should they follow you when you’re only tweeting about your own annoying promotions?

3. Engage in conversation with your Twitter friends. If they’re your friends/followers, shouldn’t you reply to them on a daily basis? I don’t mean reply to all of them everyday, just do several replies to various tweets a day. Again, your potential followers will look at your Twitter timeline and if you don’t ever talk to anyone, it’s a big turn off. It says ME, ME, ME. So hit @reply and give attaboys, words of encouragement, comments on their blog post link or tell them how you like their latest product. Offer answers when someone has a question, which is an excellent way to brand yourself as an expert. And if someone @replies to one of your posts, it’s considered common courtesy to comment back.

The biggest advantage of Twitter is using it to build relationships. Offer value, yes, but also take the time to “talk” to people so they can see you as a real life person. Give first, make friends, and watch your business world open up – just from tweeting on Twitter.

The life blood of any website is traffic, not traffic in the real world sense, but a large flow of internet visitors to your website. The more visitors to your website, the more money you will make. But getting a large flow of visitors is not as easy as it sounds, it doesn’t just happen, you have to make it happen, and here are 4 very effective ways of going about this.

1. Conduct joint ventures with other webmasters or list owners. Creating an effective joint venture is one of the quickest and most profitable ways of boosting your website traffic and massively increasing your sales.

A joint venture is simply an agreement made between two parties in which they both benefit. In your case, you have a product to sell and what you need to find is somebody who has a large list of subscribers and who is looking for good quality products to offer their list. You would offer the list owner a percentage of each sale in exchange for them recommending your product to their subscribers.

The key with joint ventures is to find list owners who are not direct competitors. For example, if you have a product related to puppy care you joint venture with somebody who has an ezine dedicated to dog breeding, or you could joint venture with your local vet.

2. Write articles related to the topic of your niche product and submit them to as many article directories and ezine editors you possibly can. Writing articles serves three purposes:

i) It sets you up as an expert in your niche. If your articles appear in many newsletters and hundreds of websites, people will perceive you as an expert.

ii) At the bottom of each article there is a brief bio in which you can place a link back to your website. If people are impressed with the content of your article, they will click on the link to your website to read more.

iii) Each of your articles that are published on the internet is one more link back to your website. The more links that point back to your website the more relevant your website will appear to the search engines and the higher your page will rank.

The key with articles is to submit them everywhere, to as many different places as possible. Submitting articles manually will take days, so use a paid submission service.

3. Promote your website using pay per click search engines. Your first task is to find as many keywords and keywords phrases related to your product (that people are typing into the search engines) as possible. We’re not talking about ten or twenty, but hundreds, over a thousand if you can. Next you need to create a brief classified type advertisement which has a catchy benefit laden headline.

When you have these, enter them into your pay per click search engine and decide on a maximum bid for each keyword (the amount you are prepared to pay when a person clicks on the headline for your advertisement). When a surfer enters the same keyword phrase as one of yours associated with your advertisement, your advertisement will be displayed as a “Sponsored Listing” and if the surfer clicks your ad, you get charged the bid amount and the surfer is taken to your website.

4. Get as many links as possible pointing to your website. As mentioned earlier, the more links pointing to your website, the higher it will rank in the search engines for the keywords you have optimized the page for.

There is another side to having hundreds or thousands of links pointing to your website… You also get a considerable amount of traffic from people clicking on those links. This type of traffic tends to be very targeted as people won’t click on a text link unless it is of interest to them.

Millions of people are drawn to the websites every day just to chat. Chatting is one of the most popular activities done by those using the web. Many people admit that once they begin chatting, they become almost addicted to it. The average online “chatter” will log on at least once a day for a chat. Although there is no definite reason why people love this form of communication, there is something to be learned by their behavior. When it comes to your website traffic, you may be able to utilize this chat “addiction” to increase website traffic. There are two main ways you can use chatting to help your site. One involves less startup time, but more maintenance time by you. The other involves a longer startup time, but less maintenance. Consider these ideas and begin using chatting to help your website increase traffic immediately.

If you’re interested in using the chat audience, then you can certainly log in a few hours a day delivering advertisement to them. This basically means that you can go into chat rooms with the purpose of posting your website link into the chat. You can do this randomly, hitting a room, posting the link without prompt from other chatters, and leaving to another room. This is the best way to reach the largest number of chatters. The best way to do this is to join rooms that relate in some way to your website and its content. However, by doing this, you will likely annoy some chatters, which is not good for your website. You can decide whether the risk is worth it or not.

You can also be more personal about your advertisements. This will call for going to rooms where you think the most selective targeted audience may be located. For instance, if your website is about music, then you may want to visit chat rooms with music themes. Once you engage in conversation a bit, you can freely and casually bring your website link into conversation. You may gain more respect with this approach but you will likely not have as large of an audience as with the random posts. If you are an avid chatter, then also consider adding your website link to your chatting profile. As you chat, others in the room will be looking at your profile, without you even knowing they are doing so. This is a subtle, but effective way to use chatting to help increase your website’s traffic. Those that view your profile will likely want to check out your site and may even tell others about it as well.

Another way to use chatting to increase website traffic is by adding a chat element to your website. This will likely take quite a while to set up. Adding chat to your room is not the simplest thing to do. It can however be a great way to draw people into your website. This is especially true if your website is about a specific hobby, passion, or job. If you have a retail site, it is unlikely that chat would be appropriate. However, if your site is about stock tips, then a chat room would enable traders to discuss tips and information with each other, which would likely keep them and their friends coming back frequently. One thing to remember however is that you should always monitor your website’s chat area every once in a while. It would be unfortunate to have chatters using your room inappropriately or abuse certain policies you have placed upon chatters. This would only make your website look unprofessional.

Using chatting to help increase website traffic is a free way to advertise. If you do chat often, you have likely seen other chatters using this delivery as well. Take note on which methods of chat delivery is most attractive to you when you see others doing the same thing. This will allow you to have a view on both sides of the issue and likely help you to create a plan that is more effective. The more time and effort you put into this task, the faster you will see results, so go ahead and start right away.

If you are a reader of the Internet (as you’re reading this online I’ll assume you are) then you know all about blogging and how interesting, educational and informative it can be. Have you ever thought about the content that you are reading when you read a blog? Did you know that there is such a thing as content articles that people put in their blogs to help attract readers to their site? It’s true—and if you have a blog, you can make use of content articles to help boost the popularity of your blog.

When you add good quality content articles to your blog, you can attract more readers to your blog in a variety of ways. Here are a few reasons why content articles are a good idea if you are looking to boost your readership.

Keywords are important: Nothing will attract more readers to your site faster than keywords. When a person puts in certain words in an Internet search sites, websites that contain those words will show up first. For example, if you are a small business owner that sells latex balloons, then you can have content articles that contain the keywords “latex balloons”. When a reader or potential customer types in those words, your site (providing a web crawler has found it) will pop up your site.

Informative and educational: Content articles are informative, educational and yes, entertaining. If you are not good at writing, you can easily find web content writers to help you fill your blog with content articles. Your readers want to read something that pertains to them-they do not want to waste his or her time reading garbled information that have no value or use to them. Content articles can help you solve this problem by giving them what they are looking for.

Update often: When you use content articles on your Internet blogs, you can easily update your information whenever you see fit. This means that if you want to provide your reader with updated content articles every day or every other day, your readers will not get bored reading the same content day after day. In fact, if you make use of a good content article writer, you can order several articles on various topics at the same time. Then, you can post when you feel it is necessary. You will never run out of information and you can be sure that your readers will appreciate the regular updates.

More hits: When you have a library of content articles on your website and blog, you will soon find that you get more hits to your blog. This is important because that means that you are reaching a wide audience and you are building reader loyalty. When they come to your blog, they know they will have something that will keep them coming back for more. This is an extremely effective marketing tool for businesses, as loyal readers will soon become loyal customers. Having fresh content each day will ensure that these readers will come back and might even recommend your site to others.

So, if you are just dabbling in the world of blogging, you can certainly increase the traffic to your website by using good content articles. Whether your write the articles yourself, or you hire a writer to do it for you, your readers will enjoy your blog more. When you start posting content articles, make sure you take the time to find information that is pertinent to you and your business (if you are a business owner) and your readers. Blogging is a big business and content articles can help your blog succeed.

Keywords are the actual words or phrases typed into the search bar on a search engine. Using the correct keywords on your website is the key to successful traffic generation. If there are too many websites associated with your keyword, your website will get lost in the crush and you will not get any traffic. If your keyword is never searched your website will also not receive any traffic.

Most people spend a lot of time and money creating gorgeous websites, but very little time on keyword research. Wouldn’t it be a shame to spend all that time and effort on the website, only to have it be neglected and unseen? Just having a website is not enough; you need to make sure people see it as well. With the proper keyword research you can insure that people who are searching online for what you have can actually find you.

Before you create your website, take a few minutes and research your keywords. Google has a great tool called the Google Keyword Tool (fancy that# that can help you with your keyword research. Once you have thought about the keyword you are planning to use, go to the keyword tool and type in the keyword or phrase. If you have several keywords in mind, you can type them all in at the same time. Just put one per line in the search box you find there.

After you complete the “captcha” #text, numbers, and symbols you must type in the box to prove you’re human), you will see a spreadsheet generated by the Google Keyword Tool. On this spreadsheet is all the information you will need to make sure your keyword will work. You will see just how often that keyword is searched … both globally and locally. You can see how many websites are associated with that keyword by clicking on the keyword in the list the tool generates. If you see the keyword you had thought about using just isn’t right, there is a list of keyword ideas generated as well.

Frequently the keyword ideas generated by the keyword tool can point you in the right direction. Sometimes it’s best to look at these suggestions and see if there isn’t something that you may not have considered previously. Maybe there will be a keyword that is searched more often and with less competition than the keyword you were going to use in the first place.

For most people, keyword research is not nearly as fun as creating the website. But it’s definitely worth taking the time and putting in a bit of effort on your keyword research right from the start. It really is worth it to get this right.

Remember: your keyword research will lead to the right people arriving at your website. Those people will be looking for exactly what you have to offer.

It’s important to note that you should use more than just Google Adwords to do your research – especially when you’re targeting national words with heavy competition.

DMOZ is the directory where Google starts when it crawls the web, so getting listed in DMOZ is good for you. SEO with DMOZ starts with selecting the search terms you’re targeting, and then finding a directory category that includes them. This can be a time-consuming and difficult task. You’ll often find lots of matching categories. The trick is to find the most precise category and, if possible, a directory that does not have too many other competitors in it. You can hit a niche market simply by being placed in a category that has few competitors. DMOZ, of course, makes the final decision as to where your website will be located.

Don’t choose a category that’s too general for your site, as it might just get removed later on. Make your site stand out by using a unique, catchy description – one for people, not search engines. Remember, you will probably get a pretty hefty number of hits from DMOZ itself. When you are trying to get listed in DMOZ, don’t worry about trying to get a nice listing in the search engines that crawl here, worry about getting a good listing here. The search engines care more about where DMOZ lists your site than what you have to say about your site in your description; DMOZ cares more about how accurately described, how interesting, and how often visited your site is than where you are listed in the search engines.

A 3rd feature to be aware of is the PageRank of the category, and the number of listings on the page. You’ll do better with more specific, smaller categories, especially if they have dedicated editors. A small category with a high page rank is the best situation that you can run into. Remember that a page’s page rank is split between the number of links that go out from it so if you run into a page with a rank of seven with seventy-five out links you probably aren’t as well off as a page with a ranking of five and ten out links. This is a constant for Google Page Ranks, not an exception for DMOZ. Your targeted keywords should appear in your site’s description, towards the beginning. Don’t put them towards the end, as the editor might chop them off to save space!

Remember that once your site is submitted to DMOZ, it’s very difficult to update its description. Give it a few days to think it over before you submit it, and be more vague about websites if you think they might change. Don’t write descriptions that could become out of date easily. If you are running a monthly special you shouldn’t include this in your description unless you say something to the extent of “low price sales monthly.” If you suddenly decide that you are going to completely transform your site into something completely different you will have huge problems with your listings. Keep this in mind before you start building your site if there are possibilities that you will choose to reuse the domain that you have purchased.

If you absolutely have to resubmit, you can submit a blank form that informs the editor of your former web site that your site has changed drastically and that you want the old listing deleted. From there you can submit a new form to any category (or categories) that you need to be listed on with an updated title, description, and key words.

Multiple Listings for the Same Site.

Some editors allow multiple listings for submitted sites, especially if they’re good quality sites that span multiple DMOZ categories. It’s always best to request multiple listings – you can use the text box on the submission page to justify yourself.

If you find a good category for a niche inform the editor as to whether or not this will be a specified category and then search for any other categories that are related. You may get a good deal of hits from your niche, but it may also be a small market for a reason. If there aren’t that many people who would be utilizing that particular category, you may want to submit to other categories that will provide you with more substantial results.

Being Patient. Being Patient. Being Patient.

Follow the submission guidelines and don’t exaggerate. If no-one seems to be reviewing your site after a week or so has gone by then you could post a question. Be patient, though: most of the DMOZ directory is edited by hand, and they’re very busy. In many cases it can take as long as three months to get added.

DMOZ simply wasn’t prepared for the sudden importance it had forced upon it. One of the biggest problems with the directory is that each site must be looked at by editors, so your site might not get indexed for no reason other than the editor not liking it, or even just losin

For as long as SEO has been in existence, there have been all sorts of myths about it, and the situation isn’t helped by the number of so-called ‘experts’ spreading them. Here’s a list of the biggest SEO myths:

You can’t optimize perfectly for every site

There are 10,000 search engines out there

PageRank is dead

Your should repeat your keywords 100 times on each page

Search engines don’t have time to ban you for bad SEO

You should submit your site to every search engine going

You don’t need content to get ranked high

Meta tags are very important – our favrite

All you need is more links

SEO doesn’t require patience

New sites can’t get listed in search engines

You should have multiple domain names

It’s good to resubmit every week or every month

If you find companies that tell you any of these things, then you should run away as fast as you can. Don’t pay attention to the myths of SEO – the only techniques you should be using are ones that are proven to increase your website’s ranking.

There are a lot of unethical, unprofessional business practices in the optimization industry, and you need to make sure you have enough facts on your side to compare the services you’re being offered. To have a good SEO campaign, you can’t fall victim to the kind of big promises that are always un-promised in the small print. Don’t throw away your money: invest it properly in good marketing, advertising, and content.

When inexperienced and unprofessional optimizers scam uneducated SEO customers, it gives everyone who works in the field a bad name. If anyone tells you that it’s OK to keyword stuff, or that you don’t need PageRank – well, they’re just completely wrong.

If you’re trying to make money with your website, you need visitors, and that’s where SEO comes in. SEO is important because of the amount of competition you have. When you’re competing in a worldwide market, you need to stand out

Keyword research – do it right, once

A lot people use Google Adwords when conducting keyword research. This is a great tool that we utilize (in addition to others) but be sure to know what the differences between ‘broad’, ‘phrase’ and ‘exact’ are or your future money printing endeavors could be thwarted.

Broad match: The sum of the search volumes for the keyword idea, related grammatical forms, synonyms and related words

Phrase match: The sum of the search volumes for all terms that include that whole phrase

Exact match: The search volume for that keyword idea

Onsite changes

Now that you know the keywords you’re going to target – implement them. Where you may ask – here ya go:

Title tags

Headings

Paragraph titles

Keywords in body copy

Anchor text in links

Image alt text

Don’t go crazy though as keyword stuffing will get you penalized. Use the words but use them naturally.

301 domain redirect

www.yoursite.com and yoursite.com are considered 2 different sites and if you do not have one of them permanently 301 redirected your site is essentially being split in two – from an SEO perspective.

How to fix: go to your domain host and switch one of these to a permanent 301 redirect

Create a blog

Write something – ANYTHING! Content is incredibly helpful as you’re creating new, original content on the industry you’re working in which search engines love. No one knows this better than you – right? I won’t lie – this is boring for me to write this right now but it will help my SEO companies’ SEO so here I am typing away at 11pm. Every industry is a bit different and you can blog your heart out if you like but once a month should be good. Also, keep it topical and give real value not just a link to your new products – people like lists (hence this list here) and hopefully others will link to you (hint hint).

Get on social media

Don’t wanna LOL all day and waste time on this? Good. If you’re spending more than 5 minutes on social media every day you’re not doing it right. Create and interact with your clients (and potential clients) in a less formal forum. This is TOMA but you should also engage them. Take a poll on Facebook on which new products you should add, take a pic of that new snazzy prototype and put it to get some feedback. This is not the place for award winning material here – just engage and see what works. Search engines are putting more and more of a focus on social and you should own this space.

There are five simple tasks that you need to do daily to keep your site on top. While daily is too much for someone with a small or localized site these should be done at least once a week.

1. You need to manage your links. This involves making sure that none of your current links are dead, and you should also check if there are any sites linking to you that you don’t know about. If your site consists of a large number of links you should make sure that they aren’t getting out of control and get rid of anything that is no longer relevant. Also make sure that your links are sufficiently labelled to reflect the page that they link to.

2. Re-order your links, putting the best ones first. And putting them into categories if you have a high number of links. If you have a links page with 25+ links it is a good idea to turn it into a directory of some sort. This can even help you in getting more links to your site in exchange for back links on the directory that you have created. Also check the sites that you link to and make sure that any back links that are due to you are still there as you don’t have much reason to keep a link if you aren’t getting the backlink that you deserve (if the back link was, indeed, negotiated when you placed the link onto your site).

3. Process link request emails. Whenever you receive requests for a link exchange, respond quickly. Not every mail you receive will be a good one, and you should make sure to check any site that wants you to link to it. If you are declining a link request let the web master know why. Perhaps you have an incite that they do not have. They may be able to fix a few things and then become excellent link partners in the future. It is common curtesy to inform the web master as to whether or not you are willing to exchange links within two or three days of receiving a request. Web masters will be even more impressed if you send them a personalized message regarding your approval or disapproval of the link exchange.

4. Check link exchange forums. This is a similar aspect to the above except that in this case it is more difficult to keep track of all of the people who can potentially request links from your site. There is a lot of spam on these sorts of things as well as many really terrible and useless sites. If you encounter such a site or forum member, inform them of your problem with what they are doing and report them to a moderator/administrator if they do not correct their behavior in a suitable manor. It is important that these kinds of forums be kept clean or a search engine may consider it a link farm more than an exchange service.

5. Check each feature of your website, to make sure it’s still working properly. The dynamic content that you will probably include at some point must be delivered properly. Any messages that are generated on the fly must not be generated at a bad time. The difference between a quality dynamic site and a subpar dynamic site is that in a quality dynamic site all content is delivered at the right time and everything seems static and planned out.

Take your time with your website and make sure that you do everything you can for it each day. Keep adding anything new that you find, because updating regularly will keep search engines coming back to spider more often. Updates are crucial and if you can follow the patterns here of insuring quality and precision, you will probably be able to come up with other ways that you can insure your visitors satisfaction and your increased traffic, link count, and search engine listings.
